An attempt was made to know anatomical relationship of the round ligament the neighbouring
remarkbale structures in thirty three Koreans cadavers, namely seventeen males and sixteen females,
for the clinical use of umbilical vein catheterization.
The following results were observed.
1. Distance from the umbilicus to the xiphosternal junction:
Mean : 20.2 CM, Median : 20.0 CM.
2. Distance from the umbilicus to the portion which fibrous filaments make the cord:
Mean : 3.3 CM, Median : 3.4 CM.
3. Distance from the umbilicus to the entrance which the round ligament is burried into the
falciform ligament:
edge of the liver.
Mean : 9.3 CM, Median : 9.5 CM.
4. Distance from the entrance of the round ligament into the falciform ligement to the anterior
edge of the liver.
Mean : 7.5 CM, Median : 7.5 CM.
5. Distance from the anterior edge of the liver to the umbilicoportal junction:
edge of the liver.
Mean : 2.1, Median : 2.0.
6. Distance from the umbilicoportal junction to the portion which a catherter is passed directly
into wall of portal vein:
Mean : 2.1, Median : 2.0CM.
7. Angle between the round ligament and the horizontal plane:
Mean : 33 degrees, Median : 33 degrees.
8. Angle between the round ligament and the median line of the abdominal wall:
Mean : 18 degrees, Median : 17 degrees.
